PDL’s Commitment to Combating Deforestation: Implementing the EUDR with Responsibility and Transparency

Discover how PDL is preparing for the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) with full transparency, certified sourcing, and future-ready traceability

At Papeteries du Léman (PDL), responsibility is more than a principle—it’s a daily practice. As environmental expectations rise, so does our resolve to lead with integrity and transparency. That’s why PDL is fully committed to implementing the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), set to take effect on December 30, 2025, not as a compliance obligation, but as a powerful opportunity to reinforce the values that define us.

The EUDR marks a transformative step in global efforts to combat deforestation, requiring that products entering the European market—such as paper—must not come from land deforested or degraded after December 31, 2020. For PDL, this regulation aligns seamlessly with our ongoing sustainability strategy and longstanding dedication to responsible sourcing.

Turning Compliance into Commitment

Rather than treating EUDR as a constraint, we see it as a catalyst to accelerate our environmental ambitions. Cross-functional teams across PDL—Purchasing, Sales, Quality Assurance, and IT—have come together to build a unified, traceable, and future-proof response. From digital due diligence systems to supply chain transparency, every layer of our operation is being reinforced to ensure full compliance with the regulation’s three pillars:

  • Collecting reliable data on the origin of our raw materials
  • Conducting in-depth risk assessments to detect deforestation risks
  • Mitigating threats through decisive action—including supplier engagement or disengagement where necessary

Responsible Paper, From Forest to Finish

At the heart of our approach is a deep respect for the ecosystems we depend on. Every sheet of baking paper we produce—especially under our flagship brand, Primabake—is made exclusively using FSC® (FSC C023778) and PEFC (10-32-2155) certified fibers. These internationally recognized certifications guarantee that our raw materials are sourced from sustainably managed forests that uphold strict social, environmental, and economic standards.

By choosing only certified suppliers and maintaining a rigorous green procurement policy, we actively protect biodiversity and forest integrity—long before the final product ever reaches our customers.

Traceability as a Standard, Not an Exception

Our investments in transformation are key to our readiness. With enhanced systems for due diligence and data collection, we are building a robust foundation to guarantee traceability at every stage of production. Each batch of paper can be traced back to its source, allowing us—and our customers—to confidently verify compliance and environmental responsibility.

This level of transparency is more than a regulatory requirement; it’s a reflection of who we are. It’s our way of ensuring that our partners and clients—from industrial bakers to packaging experts—can count on paper that’s not only high-performing, but ethically and sustainably made.

Shaping the Future Responsibly

“Our ambition is not just to meet expectations, but to set the standard,” says Stéphane Barbereau, General Manager at PDL. “Through the EUDR, we’re reinforcing a commitment we’ve always held: to create products that support professionals while safeguarding the planet.”

From our sourcing policies to our supply chain technology, every action we take is designed to protect the forests that sustain us. Whether it’s in a bakery oven or a food-safe wrapper, our papers carry with them a story of care, responsibility, and innovation.

For those who believe that performance should never come at the planet’s expense, PDL is proud to lead the way—one ethical decision at a time.
